A Breakout Renovation
Our clients came to us with a vision to reprogram and renovate their first floor, focusing on the kitchen. As with most 1960s era houses, rooms were built smaller and more compartmentalized back in the day. When expanding the existing footprint of the home isn’t a viable option, we look within to find options for more usable space. The classic dining room is often the most optimal choice, as it can be an underutilized room, but presents a great way to expand a kitchen into an adjacent room. That was the case here, not only by designing an open floor plan, but also providing flow and function for this growing family. Continuing throughout the first floor, we updated the living room by covering most of the brick chimney with woodwork, and adding warmth with an old barn timber for the mantle. Finally, we refurbished the staircase, incorporating moldings and millwork, and creating a more welcoming feeling to the home upon entering through the front door.
