Long Term Beauty
A whole house renovation, the main focus was on the first-floor addition, and providing aging-in-place solutions. These days, people are planning ahead more to consider if they want to stay in their home long-term and what those needs might be down the road. This client loves their home and was ready for a complete renovation while also choosing to stay put and preparing the space for aging-in-place, including wanting an elevator. Certainly doable, it’s not an everyday occurrence, and needs to be budgeted for, both in cost, and in complexity of how to best integrate it to an existing home. Though not inexpensive, it’s something that can be good to explore for both the aging process and/or for those with a disability where an in-home elevator could be helpful. It’s possible to reorganize interior spaces to allow for an elevator shaft to be installed, and in this case, we reworked the coat closet and powder room on the first floor and the bathroom upstairs to accommodate the elevator.
As with most 1990s homes, kitchens were designed in a more utilitarian way as opposed to being a spacious place to gather. Our client loves to entertain and wanted a bigger kitchen, so it was determined that the best solution would be to expand out the back of the home. This also gave us the opportunity to create a separate sun room which serves as the dining room and eat-in space. Along with the living room, the whole floor plan is now open, allowing for a great setting that is ready for company!
